Books and Media for Healing
This is a page filled with resources for further individual research and growth. Some of my clients ask for book recommendations, or tell me that having further knowledge, education, validation, and consolation to be helpful. Below is a list of books and other media that I recommend.
Trauma
Trauma and Recovery: the aftermath of violence — From domestic abuse to political terror by Judith Herman, M.D. / This both provides a fantastic overview of trauma, regardless of cause. Good for those who want to learn more about the effects of traumatic experiences, whether you are a survivor, loved one, or clinician wanting to learn more.
Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter Levine / This book discusses the protective nature of the somatic experience of a freeze response during trauma, and explains how to release the traumatic energy that gets stuck in the body once danger has passed. This book is very powerful in understanding how PTSD is caused not only by memories but also by physiological and nervous system contributing factors.
The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse by Ellen Bass and Laura Davis / For women who are healing from childhood sexual abuse, this is the book to read for validation. It serves as a clear and honest guide through the stages of healing from childhood sexual abuse. This book can be triggering, so read it at a pace that feels comfortable and seek support from individual or group therapy as needed.
The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation by Deb Dana / Written for clinicians but accessible to anyone who wants to understand the fight, flight, freeze responses and how to return nervous system regulation to the body as a vital step in healing from trauma.
Couples and Divorce
You Are the One You’ve Been Waiting For: Bringing Courageous Love to Intimate Relationships by Richard Schwartz / This book is written for clinicians who work with couples clients, but is a really fantastic book for anyone who wants to understand and explore the true nature of intimate relationships. This book also helps people understand how cultural expectations and individual needs play into “bad” decisions about choosing and staying with partners. This book provides a very good roadmap for understanding ourselves, our partners, our clients, and our desire for healthy intimacy.
Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce by Elizabeth Marquardt / This is a very good book for parents of children living with divorce, or adults who grew up with divorced parents who are seeking to heal their own childhood wounds. This is also a powerful book for clinicians who may be looking to understand more about the experience of being a child of divorce.
